User testing: why is it important?
In the rapidly evolving landscape of technology and innovation, businesses are prioritizing the creation of user-centric products and services as a crucial strategy to maintain their competitive edge. User testing, frequently referred to as one of the key ingredients for achieving success in product development, has risen to prominence as an indispensable practice in pursuit of this goal.
What does user testing consist of?
User testing is a research method that involves observing and gathering feedback from real users as they interact with your product or service.
Why is user testing important?
User testing has different primary goals. First, it can help you identify usability issues that users may encounter while using your product (pain points, positive attributes, perception of the product, etc.). User testing reveals unexpected insights and will help you highlight issues you wouldn’t have noticed otherwise.
During this process, users can also provide feedback on their overall user experience and satisfaction. You will be able to evaluate if your product meets your customer’s needs and expectations and improve your user satisfaction in the long run.
After collecting and analyzing their feedback, you will also be able to make some informed design and development decisions. The user testing process can save you time, resources, and money before releasing your product on the market.
When should you conduct user testing?
User testing can take place throughout the process of building your product. In the early stage of your product development process, you can collect feedback about your initial idea.
While starting to build your MVP, you can start testing things such as your website architecture or the information present on your MVP.
Towards the end of your product development process and before releasing your product on the market, you will be able to identify usability issues and analyze your overall user satisfaction with the product.
In this Traction series video “How we used fast customer feedback to build product insights”, UserTesting CMO Michelle Huff will discuss their product development framework and discuss how they used customer feedback to (in)validate early ideas and build a shared understanding of the customer to avoid the second-guessing, and avoid debating and Monday-morning-quarterbacking that PMs often encounter when building products.
