Website - Hosting & Building

Having a polished and functional website is pivotal for your business. It not only sets the tone for a positive first impression but also acts as a central hub for information, a direct line of communication, and a showcase for your offerings. This digital presence bolsters your credibility and nurtures trust among prospective clients.

Embarking on the journey of website creation might seem challenging at first, but rest assured, there are ample online resources and services to assist you. In this session, we will walk you through some of the steps you need to take in order to build a website.

  1. Decide on the goal of your website

As a first step, you will need to determine why you need to create a website and what is the purpose of this website. Understanding what you hope to achieve with this website will help you make informed decisions and better convey your message to the visitors.

  1. Choose a domain name

Your domain name is like your website’s address on the web. Selecting a memorable and relevant domain name for your website is an important step. In a previous session of this course, you decided on a company name for your business this might help you find a domain name for your website.

In this article, Techradar put together a list of domain registrars where you can register your domain name. Before buying a domain name, make sure your website builder doesn’t offer a free domain name with their plans.

  1. Pick your hosting provider

You will now need to find a Web hosting provider to host the URL where you will build your website and make your content accessible on the internet. You can find a list of web hosting providers and a comparison between all of them in this article from WebsiteSetup. Then you will potentially have a third provider to design your website. To simplify things, some companies like Wix or Wordpress offer all-in-one options which might be very convenient and save you some time.

  1. Plan your website structure

In a previous session of this course - website: Information Architecture - you worked on your website sitemap, your website content and did a competitor website analysis. This will help you define your website structure and organize your content effectively.

  1. Develop your website

Now that your domain name is registered, that you have a hosting provider, and that you worked on your website structure it is time to start developing your website. If you have a technical background, you might want to build your website from scratch and start coding your website. If you don’t have a technical background, no worries there are multiple easy-to-use and powerful tools available to help you build your website. You can find a list of website builders in this article from Launch’s Alumni WishPond. You can also take a look at our next session about landing pages and the video from our Mentor Raphael talking about building a web page with Canva.

Here is a list of resources to help you build your website:

Build you website using AI tools: Take a look at durable.co for example. Video on How to make a Wordpress website from scratch. No-code solution: Build a no-code web application or website with Pineapple.

  1. Additional steps before making your website live

Now that you have a website, you will need to start organizing your content, test your website, do some SEO optimization, and test it. Once you are satisfied with your website and have tested it thoroughly, it will be time to make it live!

Having a website is critical for your business but like your product, your website will be subject to changes and improvements. Make sure to get constant feedback from other founders, users, and peers to make sure it stays relevant and up to date.
