Talk To Your Customers
Transcript - Talk to your customers video
Let’s say you have a brilliant idea for this world-changing product. You start building your product. You put in all your savings. You just know it’s going to work. No one in the market has done it just like you. You know it in your gut, it’s just going to work. You spend the next few months creating the product or find someone to help you build it. Be it an app, a t-shirt collection, a digital design, a website directory, or a new smoothie recipe, you feel very proud that you got it done. Your masterpiece, the thing that will change the world, is ready to be released. Time for the big unveiling, you are ready to let the world know. Your website is ready, you worked with a marketing team to do this big launch with social media ads and posts, a press release, and you are certainly going to let your friends, family, and community know. Everything is in place and you hit the go button. The website is published, press releases are sent out, and social media campaigns are in full swing. The world will never be the same.
But nothing happens. No one signs up, no t-shirts are sold, no orders come through, and no one gets to know about your world changing idea! What happened? And what about all the time and money you spent to build and launch?! You had a failed launch. Something very natural in the life of an entrepreneur. The problem is not so much that the launch has failed, the problem is that you took too long to launch, you spent too much, and you have no idea what exactly didn’t work! Obviously, no one wants to go through such an experience. You are here to learn how to successfully build and launch your business.
So what did you miss? Well… you probably missed many things, and the next few sessions will go through the elements that you can execute on so you can successfully launch products and build a successful business. The first thing that most miss is talking to your customers. Seems easy, yet most entrepreneurs make the mistake of building first and talking to their customers later. So they are likely to end up building something no one wants.
Talk to your customers to find out what they are looking for, what they value, why they would buy, and the best ways to reach them. Entrepreneurs prefer to work in their proverbial garage, to focus on what they control, the product, instead of wandering into the world of the unknown and going through the painstaking process of learning about their customers. But if you want success in building the business, you must step into the world of your customers and be the expert when it comes to what your customers need, want, value, buy, and appreciate. Great entrepreneurs are customer experts.
So talk to your customers. But don’t just start anywhere. Start with your early adopters.
