Moving to a new city means creating a new social circle (or at least an additional one). Social integration can be difficult sometimes but the good news is that Vancouver is a multicultural city with people from all around the world. According to the BC government’s website, British Columbia is the most ethnically diverse province in Canada and welcomes nearly 40,000 new immigrants every year. So there is no doubt that a lot of people are in the same situation as you and are also looking to meet new people. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to forge new connections so here are a few tips on how to meet new people who share your interests in Vancouver.
VOLUNTEERING
Volunteering can be a very good way to give back to your community and also to meet new people who share your interests. Volunteering will not only give you practical experience of the Canadian workplace but also add valuable Canadian experience to your resume (especially if you have no work experience in the country yet). Volunteering will also help you develop your network and eventually help you have access to the “hidden job market”.
In British Columbia, you will have access to a diverse range of volunteer opportunities to fit your goals, skills, interest, and schedule. To find volunteering opportunities you can directly research and identify organizations that are meaningful to you and contact them directly. You can also find volunteer opportunities on different platforms :

MEETUP
Meetup is a service used to organize online groups that host in-person events for people with similar interests. These groups offer a bridge between newcomers to Vancouver (and BC) and those already established in. The good news is that there’s a Meetup group for just about everyone. So whether you are interested in dancing Charleston, hiking all around BC, or learning Data Science you will find a group corresponding to your interests.
Facebook can also help you grow your social circle. Facebook groups provide a community to bring together people who share common interests. Depending on your interests Facebook may have groups you can join in Vancouver. You simply have to go to the search bar at the top of your Facebook home page and select groups to refine your results.
On Facebook, there is also a list of all the upcoming events near you and other things to do that fit your interests.
ATTENDING EVENTS
You can also consider attending one of the many events happening almost every single day in Vancouver; just check Eventbrite for proof. Vancouver is filled with different conferences and networking opportunities for just about every industry, hobby, or interest. Do some research on upcoming conferences or events in your area.
