Communities
Ontario is a large province with several cities which includes a large diversity of immigrant communities as well as local Canadian communities. Whether you are looking to make friends, or find other newcomer families or to build your own community there are several ways to meet people in the different cities.
The first is to consider popular meetup sites such as:
Meetup
Meetup is a global platform that facilitates in-person gatherings based on shared interests. In Ontario, numerous Meetup groups cater to a wide array of interests, from tech and entrepreneurship to hiking and book clubs. Users can search for groups in their local area and join events to connect with like-minded individuals.
Lu.ma
This is an online platform designed for event management, ticketing and community building. They are similar to Meetup but have been growing in popularity especially for professional meetups, networking events, online workshops and community gatherings and is particularly popular with small businesses, content realtors, and community organizers.
Reddit Communities
Reddit features several Ontario-focused communities where users discuss local news, events, and topics of interest. Some notable subreddits include:
r/ontario: A subreddit dedicated to news and discussions relevant to Ontario. r/toronto: Focused on Toronto-specific content and discussions. r/ottawa: Centered around Ottawa news and events.
Libraries & Community Centre’s
Many local libraries and community centers in Ontario maintain online calendars and forums where residents can learn about upcoming events, workshops, and classes. Participating in these events can be a great way to meet new people and engage with the community.
Community Centres are also great for your family, they not only offer various services such as summer camps, classes, athletic activities, they are also a great place to know about various events happening in the city and to get connected with other locals.
TRIBE Magazine Online community
Originally a free print magazine distributed in Toronto and across Canada from 1993 to 2005, TRIBE Magazine transitioned to an online presence as an internet message board and social network. The platform offers various “rooms” or sub-forums covering topics such as new music, technology, nightlife, culture, sports, and politics. With over 4.5 million individual message posts, it stands as one of the largest online communities in Canada.
Suggested Prompts
How can newcomers effectively choose the most suitable community platform or event to meet people with similar interests?
In what ways might participating in local online communities like Reddit or TRIBE Magazine enhance a newcomer’s integration into Canadian society?
What strategies can community centers and libraries use to better engage diverse immigrant communities and foster inclusion?
