As part of the application for your Canadian Work Visa & Permanent Residency, you and your family members will be required to take a medical examination.

Information on medical instructions will be provided to you once you receive your assessment notice.

⚠️These medical results are valid up to 12 months from the date of your first medical examination so please confirm with your Immigration partner when to book your exam.

If your permanent residency does not get approved within the 12 months, you will be required to retake the medical examinations.

** Note that some people might be exempt from completing another immigration medical examination. You can find information about the IME here. Please confirm with your immigration representative if you have to take a medical examination or not. **

Who can do your medical exam?

For the medical examination, you will be required to see a doctor that is certified to conduct IRCC required medical examinations. To find the list of doctors, please click here.

Please note that the panel physician does not make the final decision about your medical exam, it will be up to the IRCC.

What is required prior to the medical examination?

  1. Proper identification - at least 1 government-issued document with your photograph and signature. This can be a passport or a national identity card.

  2. Eyeglasses or contact lenses if you wear them

  3. Any medical reports or test results that you have for any previous or existing medical conditions

  4. A list of your current medications

  5. A Medical Report form (IMM 1017E) which will be sent out from the government. If you do not receive an IMM 1017E form or wish to do your medical examination in advance, you can do an Upfront Medical Exam*

  6. 4 recent photographs if the physician is not registered with eMedical*

*eMedical is an online tool that is used by doctors to upload and record all medical examination results to the IRCC.

*An upfront medical examination will require the same documentation as listed above, the only difference is that you may be required to fill out an information sheet which would include personal details such as an address, date of birth and so on.

How much is the medical examination?

The costs of the immigration medical examination will vary between doctors. You will be required to pay for the following fees:

  1. The fee for your doctor

  2. The fee for your radiologist

  3. Any specialists you may need to see

  4. Any special tests, investigations or treatment required.

What to expect during the exam?

  1. On arrival, you will be asked for identification to confirm your identity.

  2. Your doctor will then ask you to fill out a medical history questionnaire which will ask about any previous or existing medical conditions. You will also be asked to list any medications that you are currently taking.

  3. You will then undergo a physical exam which will include:

Weight Height Check for hearing and vision Blood pressure check Pulse check Heart and lungs chest Skin and limb observation

  1. Depending on your age, you may also be required to do additional tests* which include:

A Chest X-Ray Blood test Urine Test

  1. Once your examination is complete, the doctor will be sending the results on their end to the IRCC. You will also be receiving a document that will confirm that you have completed the medical exam. Please keep this document as proof and follow any instructions given to you by your doctor.

*For those with younger children, depending on the physician children younger than a certain age will not be required to do a blood draw or a chest x-ray.

How to include your medical exam results with your application?

Depending on the type of examination and whether or not your doctor uses eMedical, there are several ways to submit your medical exam results. Please confirm with your Immigration Representative how to submit your medical exam results to IRCC before sending anything.

  1. For those that have completed an Upfront Medical Exam before sending in your application, you will need to include a copy of the Upfront Medical Report Form with your application.

  2. If your doctor works with eMedical, they will give you an Information Sheet or a Tracking sheet printout that you will need to upload online during your application process or send to your lawyer.

  3. If you had your medical exam after submitting your application, you will not be required to send anything to the IRCC.

⏰Average Time for Completion (for booking and passing): 13 Weeks
