SIN Number stands for Social Insurance Number which is a 9-digit code that you will require in order to work within Canada and to have access to government programs and benefits. A SIN Number is unique to each person that it is registered to and it cannot be legally used by anyone else.

Who is eligible to register for a SIN Number?

  1. Canadian Citizens

  2. Permanent Residents

  3. Temporary Residents (Only certain visa’s are applicable such as Work Permits)

What do you need?

1. Primary Document - For Temporary Status Holders (Work, Study) this will be the work permit or study permit that is issued by the IRCC. For those with Permanent Residency Status, this can be your Permanent Resident Card issued by the IRCC, or Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR). 

2. Secondary Document - This can be any official document that confirms your identity. This document must be valid and issued by a Canadian Government (Federal, provincial or territorial) or it can be a foreign passport. The following information needs to be provided on this document: Legal Name & Date of Birth

3. Supporting Document - This is only required if the name on your primary document is different from the one on your secondary document. Examples of supporting documents can be certificate of marriages, divorce decree or legal change of name certificates.

  1. Proof of Address - This is a document that confirms the address indicated on your online SIN application. You will receive a letter mailed to you requesting for this documentation and the proof of address must fit under the following criteria:

Issued by one of the following: A government, a company, an institution, an organization, a landlord or an employer and can be: A document or an Attestation Letter signed by the issuer.  Must contain the name (Family name and given name) that matches with your primary, secondary or supporting document.  *If you are applying on behalf of someone else, it must contain the name of the parent, legal guardian or legal representative’s name as it appears on the provided documents. It must clearly show the applicant’s address and match the one on the provided SIN application

Note 📝

An envelope is not acceptable as proof of address. Correspondence from the SIN program, such as a previous Confirmation of SIN Letter or a rejection is not acceptable as a proof of address. No SIN confirmation will be sent to an employer’s address unless the client resides on the employer’s premises. 

How to register for SIN Number

  1. Online - You can apply online here, please have digital copies of your documentation prepared beforehand which includes: digital copy of Primary Document, digital copy of a valid Secondary Document, a digital copy of your Proof of Address and a digital copy of your original Supporting Document if applicable.

  2. Mail - You can apply through mail, however this will require you to submit the original documentation. You will also need to provide a completed and signed SIN Application Form that you can download from here. If you are unable to print a physical form, you can also request a hardcopy document of the registration form by calling in at 1-866-274-6627

  3. In Person - You can apply in person by going to any Service Canada Centre’s, click here to find one near you.
