THE CHILDCARE SYSTEM
Childcare in Vancouver is in quite high demand. Finding a good daycare, childcare worker, babysitter or nanny can be a difficult task as there are a lot of factors and steps you want to take to ensure your children are in safe hands. With the high demand for childcare in the province, many daycares have wait lists of up to a few years at a time.
* Daycare/Childcare Facilities: Probably the most popular option for families with younger children in which both parents are working full-time or are busy for most of the week. Daycare facilities have options that provide either full-time care provisions or a “flex” schedule in which you can choose up to 2-3 days per week for a set amount of hours per month.
* Nanny: If you have extra income, getting a full-time nanny may be an option to look into. There are plenty of nanny/caregiver workers that can be found through third-party apps, programs, or websites.
* Babysitters: This is also an option for those who need a last-minute child-care option for a few hours of child supervision. Generally, babysitters are younger students (high school +) who are looking to make a few extra dollars but the definitions of babysitter/nanny are generally intertwined. Some ways to look for a babysitter can include posting online advertisements or posting on local school boards (with permission) or childcare-specific portals.
You can have a look at the Childcare map created by the government of BC to get an idea of all the childcare facilities available in the province. The ones that are listed on this map are all licensed. The website is not always perfectly up to date but it can give you a global overview of the different locations that are existing and also give you the contact information for each childcare facility in the province. You can filter the results by city, distance, program type, and services offered.
In BC, the Ministry of Children and Family Development also created Child Care Resource and Referral (CCRR) Centers to help families find quality licensed and registered Child care by giving them all information, support, and resources needed.
